What do you get when you mix a few elementary school teachers, a couple of computer techs, a surveyor/firefighter and an administrative assistant with attitude together in a van for a few days? Why, the Amity Island Running Club, of course!
Amity Island was a fictional town created for the movie Jaws, which was primarily filmed on the Island of Martha’s Vineyard.
The Amity Island Running Club (AIRC) was dreamed up after 2 members ran in the Reach the Beach Relay in Massachusetts in May 2013. Those members decided that more people needed to experience this same type of torture. After a few months of scouting, recruiting and meeting, The AIRC was officially founded.
The AIRC participated in the Cape Cod Ragnar Relay in 2014, a 193 mile relay race from Hull, Ma to Provincetown, Ma. The race is a 2-day event (including running overnight) with a motto of “Run, Drive. Sleep? Repeat.”. It proved to be an amazing weekend, and the AIRC knew The Club was something special.
Our first Thirsty Thursday run was in June of 2015 and since them we have taken over a 5K (Amity Island 5K- the first Sunday of August,) and have hosted many group runs to benefit various charities. Our group continues to grow and we have made friends from all corners of the world! If you haven’t joined us, what are you waiting for?
We encourage you to join the club – come run (or walk) with us, sport the logo, participate in crazy events, and live life to the fullest!
Proceeds from the sale of our merchandise benefits various island charities, as well as other groups and causes.
